16C+  "Under 4 Ever"    Additive

This techno-fuelled beauty of a track has been hammered since its initial release in '98 by the likes of Carl Cox, John Digweed and even the Underground Resistance crew, proving that a good tune can cross all boundaries. And make no mistake, this is a very good tune indeed. Under 4 Ever builds with such pace that you might be frightened that your decks can't keep up, before expliding into an epic trance workout of gargantuan proportions. Trust me, you'll be able to burn up any dancefloor with this tremendous twelve. One to spin is Gil's Spiritual Remix. A huge breakdown and some of the brightest kicks ever committed to vinyl give this a real edge. Good on Additive for re-releasing this monster. Go seek. (4 stars)
Various
'Additive Compilation Sampler 1' (ADDITIVE)

Additive is one of the most consistent labels around and this sampler from its forthcoming compilation album is a taste of things to come. On the A-side comes a belter of a remix of 16C+'s 'Under 4 Ever'. Gil's Spiritual mix is a hypnotic prog-house number and once it gets going it just pulls you in with various little repetitive hooklines and synth stabs. The track builds and builds to an almost cliché`d breakdown in the middle (minus the snare rolls) and it kicks back in again after a huge build up. The ground will shake when you listen to this. On the AA-side is a new mix of Storm's classic 'Storm' by Housetrap. The Housetrap remix is on the more slamming and banging tip, and if you liked the original then this will probably be your bag. All in all, the future looks bright for Additive. M7/M8 (Gary Curley)

Gil's Spiritual Mix

Rating: 8 out of 10  (Patrick)

Comment: I'm really enthousiastic about this release that brings yet another cool producer to my attention: Gilbert van Haasen. Funny thing is that Gilbert (a.k.a. Gil') was e-mailing with me in English to promote his record. It took some time to notice that he's also from the Netherlands.

On this release you'll find a very interesting dub mix from 'Prana' that has a specific tech-housy rhythm combined with
a rolling bass line. That bass line is used in the breaks to keep the pressure on the speakers. Kick drum and percussion is all you need to start jumping again.

Gilbert's remix is called Spiritual, but I don't trace any Zen thinking elements here. This remix is dark and very powerful so it can be used as high point in a set from Digweed but just as easy in a techno set from Remy or Max Graham. It goes a little over the top after the break, but when you have listened to it a couple of times you can use that part in your advantage.
Gil New Born - Pure Life / Spiritual Records

Rating: 7,5 out of 10 (Patrick)

Comment: Didn't I just wrote a review about Gilbert van Haasen ? Well here's another fine piece of work of him. This time no remix but a complete own 12" containing two tracks. 'New Born' has a lot of techno elements, but because of the clap on every second beat it sure feels like progressive. Add a Latin rifle to it and you have all the ingredients to start dancing. 'Pure Life' on the flip is harder and faster. Less progressive and more techno. The track slowly generates some kind of energy field on the dance floor. A wicked drive !!

Carl Cox's new F.A.C.T. and GLOBAL CD contains tracks from DJ Gilbert

"It has been three years since I released FACT2 and I feel that now is the right time to do this album. The music right now is so vibrant and alive that I wanted to share some of the most slamming, raw, Latin driven, bass heavy techno and house tunes to date. Tracks like Bushwacka "The Sound", Kiko "World Cup", Gil's (aka dj Gilbert) 'Noise Shaping' and Billy Lo's "Motorfunk". They all have their own funk and the energy of sonic sounds. I had no choice but to put these tracks on this album for you to enjoy.... So I give you FACT3. The Future Alliance of Communication and class Technology." -Carl Cox

Gilbert's track Stringsign is also used by Faithless Sister Bliss Headliners:2 CD on Ministry Of Sound
Gil' (aka Gilbert van Haasen) has a track on the new Mixmag CD

Attached to copies of the September issue of Mixmag is a free mixed CD containing Gil's 'Noise Shaping'. The CD is called "Viva Ibiza Nightlife", mixed by Pete Gooding of Renaissance. Make sure you get the right one, as there are two versions of free CDs this issue- the other is "Viva Ibiza Chill".
